There are over 300 million tires are discarded annually in the U. S. and hundreds of million are currently in illegal stockpiles needing cleanup. Over 60% of the discarded tires every year are burned or placed in landfills, and although scrap tires represent only 1% of the municipal solid waste, they are not biodegradable and pose a significant environmental problem.
